One of my kids’ favorite activities is to read books. Since we’ve exhausted our supply at home numerous times over, I was in search of a great place for the kids to go and read and check out books. It would be a bonus if they also have books for me to take home as well for those rare moments when I find the time to read. In a trusted Parents’ WhatsApp group, I was recommended to check out Reading for All, Book & More Library. As it was closer than the Shoman Foundation Library (which also has a children’s library slightly across the road from their main library), I decided to take the kids and check it out.
The library itself is in a very cozy home with a nice garden where you can take your snack to eat or sit outside on a pleasant day. They have many different categories of books for all ages and plenty of cozy spaces to read them in. They also have a couple of chess boards that my son was excited about.
The children’s section had a very nice collection that will keep us coming back again and again.
A family membership is 40 JD for a year and each member on the account can take home 3 books. They also encouraged us to add our domestic helper to the membership, so as a family of 5, we can take out 15 books each time for 3 weeks. If you need more time you can also renew them, granted there’s no waiting list for a certain title.
Though I greatly appreciate this initiative and resource to have a library in Amman, I do need to point out that I had recently tried to bring my children along with our trusted nanny so I could get out and run some errands. The staff on duty said it is not allowed as they don’t have a security guard to watch over her with the children. It was quite uncomfortable for all of us and I left feedback that they need to be more open about their policies regarding non-parental supervision at the library as it’s not disclosed in their list of rules they give you when you sign up for a membership.
