When I moved to Amman I had to change up all my natural household cleaning supply brands that I was buying in India because they aren’t available here in Jordan (and I always prefer to buy locally made products anyway). I still swear by vinegar and baking soda as effective and natural cleaning products, but laundry detergent was way over my head for DIY. I started buying all the supermarket locally made brands and found them chock full of chemicals and way too much fragrance. I scoped out the market and found some chemical-free and natural alternative brands, and I wanted to share those findings here.

DIY Laundry Detergent option
Because these natural alternatives always come with a higher price tag, I finally got around to it today to make laundry detergent powder at home. Here’s the recipe:
- 1/2 cup Epsom Salt
- 1 1/2 cups Sodium Bicarbonate (baking soda)
- you can buy it cheap at Al Rayhan shops. It’s called “carboona” in Arabic
- 1 1/2 cups Sodium Carbonate (washing soda)
- Tip: to make sodium carbonate at home, just bake sodium bicarbonate at 200 degrees for 1 hour
- 1/4 cup sea salt
- 20-25 drops of Essential Oils (optional)
Quantity:
- Regular wash: 1 heaping tablespoon
- Heavily soiled/larger loads: 2 heaping tablespoons
