I can’t believe I’ve been in Jordan for nearly half a year and I still hadn’t been to Souk Jara. To be fair, I moved here in February and Souk Jara opened on the 12th of May, but still I was long overdue for a visit. If you haven’t heard of Souk Jara, it’s the open air handicrafts market that is held every Friday from 10 am to 10 pm on Rainbow Street in Jabal Amman.
Strolling down the narrow aisles of vendors you can find everything from paintings from local artists, souvenirs, antiques, handicrafts, handmade accessories, honey, jam, soaps, etc. There is even a large section dedicated solely to books, both in Arabic and English.
At the very end of the walk you can find the Souk Jara Theatre, which hosts various local talents and live music, and the Souk Jara Cafe, for a drink or a bite to eat, not to mention some great views of the Amman skyline.
Support local artisans and head to Souk Jara 🙂

Camel Skin craft is unique in nature and highly demanded all over the world because of its elegance but there are less awareness regarding this art. Multan, a city of Pakistan is the only provider of quality camel skin craft throughout the world. Cholistan desert is 239.0 km away from Multan. It covers an area of 26,300 km2 (10,200 sq mi) and adjoins the Thar Desert, extending over to Sindh and into India. Here large number of camel die due to thirst and drought and natural climate, its skin is recycled and used in crafting. Utilization of camel skin is the same as utilization of skin of goats and sheep (years old method to get quality wool from sheep/goat skin). All camel skin craft is eco- friendly and health safe. Hi – I wish I could believe that all camel skin you use is coming from only camels that died of natural causes. There is no way to avoid animal cruelty when you are creating business from a dead animal. Thank you for the explanation, but I can’t agree with your practices. For me it is the same as saying “we make products from human skin – but only from humans that died of natural causes”.
