Moving to Amman: How to Set up Your House Before You Arrive

It’s been 7 years since I’ve lived in Jordan and it’s also a very different moving experience. When I moved to Jordan in 2017, I was 29 years old, single, and carrying just 2 suitcases. All I had to do was book a short-term rental apartment on Rainbow Street and let everything else fall into place. This time around, I’m married, have 2 small children, and we’ve bought an unfurnished home. Things couldn’t be any more different! I know that the concept of just “showing up” to our new home wasn’t a possibility, so with the help of a WhatsApp group called “Amman Expat Parents”, I was able to find some ways to get a few things on my checklist done before I even stepped foot in Jordan. I want to share some of those tips with you.

Where to Buy Kitchen Items Online in Amman

My first order of business was to stock our house with essential kitchen items like plates, cups, utensils, small appliances, etc. I found a great company based in Amman called “Whole and All”. On their website (https://wholeandall.com/), I found all that I needed like utensil sets, plates, bowls, electric kettles, pots and pans, water pitchers, chopping blocks, and more. I spoke to their team via WhatsApp to get more suggestions on items I might also need and they were super helpful. I paid online and they delivered to my new house by the next day. I just had to have our contractor open the door for them to drop off the items and my kitchen went from disfunctional to fully functional!

Where to Buy Bedding Online in Amman

Because I’m moving from India, I decided to bring all the sheets and duvet covers from a company here that I trust. But there are a few bedding items that just don’t make sense to pack in my suitcase. For those other essentials like duvets, mattress protectors, pillows, etc. everyone recommended a store called Abdeen. I don’t find their website particularly user-friendly for non-Arabic speakers, but if you know what you’re looking for, you can find it on their English translation site. Here are some quick links to help you start off.

  1. Duvets https://abdeencenter.com/bedding-abdeen-grand-stores/duvets
  2. Mattress protector/topper https://abdeencenter.com/bedding-abdeen-grand-stores/mattress-pads-toppers-protectors
  3. Pillows https://abdeencenter.com/bedding-abdeen-grand-stores/pillows

Abdeen also has other categories of items for the home like accessories, bath, kitchen & dining, but I don’t have experience with shopping those categories personally.

Eco-Tip: Abdeen does sell items made with down feathers. Check other cruelty-free options like micro-fibre and micro-gel instead.

Where to Buy Kitchen Appliances Online in Amman

When it comes to buying kitchen appliances both large and small, the biggest name in Jordan is Tahboub (https://tahboubonline.com/). On their website, you can find the bigger brand names like Whirlpool, Bosch, KitchenAid, Sub-Zero, etc. so you can fully equip your kitchen and home with all the essential electronics.

Eco-Tip: Always check the energy rating when buying appliances. A++ is the best.

Where to Buy Other Household Items Online in Amman

You may wonder why I didn’t suggest this company first, but I always prefer to support local businesses in Jordan instead of huge multi-national companies. But if you’re looking for one-stop shopping online, you can always find most of what you need at IKEA (https://www.ikea.com/jo/en/). They of course offer home delivery (at an extra cost) and their prices are probably the best in the market (Jordan is not cheap).
